How We Got Started

Rex’s Story

As a small boy, Rex’s earliest years were spent playing in the garden of his parent’s suburban San Diego home on a corner leading to a cul de’sac.  The Beatle’s song ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ was still popular and was often heard on the little AM transistor radio that Rex carried with him as he sat in a flower patch of African Daisies digging for earthworms with a tablespoon and making mud pies in aluminum pie tins.

Other fond memories include looking up to his dad, who would pull out the hose after coming home from work late in the day just before sunset to water the great variety of shrubs, flowers, and fruit trees that he planted himself in each of the three separate yards surrounding the house.

Later in life Rex discovered that he had an entrepreneurial spirit and seized any opportunity that came his way if there was a promise of putting a few extra dollars in his pocket.  Among the many odd jobs Rex took on were doing yard work which included seeding and taking care of new lawns.  If asked, Rex will tell you that his favorite color is that bright golden-green of freshly germinating grass shoots in the morning sun.

Ever since Rex was a boy, he nutured a developing interest in science, alternative energy applications, especially solar energy, hydroponics, robotics, and future tech. However, it wasn’t until later in life that he would build his first serious vertical hydroponic grow rack with LED lighting after experiencing a rapid series of health setbacks which included a pulmonary embolism in his right lung, surgery for kidney stones, chest pain, bilateral ankle swelling, weight gain, systemic joint pain, sleep apnea, general malaise and accompanying depression…no surprise there.

The joy of success of watching a microgreen crop germinate and grow was only matched by tasting the fruits of one’s labor.  Convinced that living foods and specifically eating raw, nutrient-dense microgreens as a superfood daily could be key to improving his health and well being, Rex began to experiment in the kitchen and created new recipes with microgreens, whether they were raw, cooked, or blended into green smoothies.

Well, one thing lead to another and before you knew it Farmer Rex’s passion project  evolved into a blooming business opportunity known as  River Fork Farms.

Rene’s Story

Rene Price, Rex’s wife, is a co-owner of River Fork Farms has an interesting generational story of her own which tells of her Italian, Scottish, German immigrant homesteading heritage and their connection to farming the land in Missouri west of St. Louis.

Rene’s grandmother Louise’s maiden name, Vitali, is Italian for ‘bringer of Life’.  A more suitable name couldn’t have been chosen for Louise and her parents, Serafino and Marie Vitali.   The Vitali family farmed the land behind their general store on Route 66 in Fanning, Missouri.  They made wine, grew vegetables, raised chickens, and milked cows.  In the pond were fish, leaping frogs, and at least one snapping turtle, which was eventually caught and eaten late one summer’s day. Grandma Louise is remembered for her talent to feed her seven children by cooking delicious, authentic, country food daily, including biscuits and gravy, fried chicken, and homemade blackberry pie.
